Why is oxygen so important?
Oxygen is fundamental to our existence. On a daily basis, the average adult requires 2 kg of food, 1 liter of water, and nearly 550 liters of oxygen. Astonishingly, 90% of our daily energy derives from oxygen, with the rest coming from food and water. The human brain, while only 2% of our total body weight, utilizes an astounding 25% of the oxygen we breathe. Oxygen is vital for the life-sustaining energy cycle. Insufficient oxygen in body tissues can lead to serious health issues such as infections or tissue damage. In cases of tissue hypoxia (low oxygen), prompt correction is crucial. An effective method to address tissue hypoxia is the use of a hyperbaric chamber, providing a controlled environment for oxygen therapy.
What do you feel inside a hyperbaric chamber?
During the pressurization of the chamber, you may notice pressure changes in your ears, similar to altitude adjustments in an airplane. To alleviate this sensation or any discomfort, simple actions like yawning, swallowing, or gently blowing your nose can help equalize the pressure. Beyond this minor ear pressure, you will experience no unusual sensations, allowing for a comfortable session.
How does being inside a pressurized chamber give us more oxygen?
Inside a chamber pressurized to 1.3 or 1.5 times normal air pressure, although it may feel unchanged, breathing pure oxygen significantly increases the oxygen intake, providing 7-8 times the usual amount. This phenomenon is explained by Henry's Law, which states that the quantity of gas dissolving in a liquid is proportional to its partial pressure. Pressurized oxygen dissolves directly into body fluids, markedly enhancing tissue oxygen levels and stimulating healing processes, scientifically validated for effectiveness.
What improvements can I expect to see?
The potential improvements from hyperbaric oxygen therapy vary greatly from person to person due to numerous influencing factors. While each individual's response is unique, generally, an enhancement in life quality is anticipated. It is uncommon not to witness some degree of improvement, underscoring the transformative potential of this therapy.
When will I know how many sessions of HBOT are enough?
The duration of therapy varies and relies on personal progress. Observing ongoing improvements is your best indicator. Research involving 1730 participants suggests that about 15 sessions are beneficial for acute injuries, whereas chronic conditions may require around 40 sessions. If positive results are observed within the initial sessions, continuing the therapy is advisable. Your perception of improvement will guide the frequency and number of subsequent sessions, making you the most insightful judge of your therapeutic needs.
