Why is oxygen so important?
Oxygen is vital for life! An average adult consumes 2 kg of food, 1 liter of water, and nearly 550 liters of oxygen daily. Astonishingly, 90% of our energy is derived from oxygen, with the remaining 10% from food and water. Our brain, though only 2% of our body weight, uses a staggering 25% of the oxygen we inhale. Oxygen fuels the energy cycle that keeps us alive. A deficiency in oxygen can trigger a cascade of adverse events, leading to diseases, infections, or tissue damage. Hypoxia, or low oxygen in tissues, offers a fleeting window for intervention. A remarkable solution is the use of a hyperbaric chamber to combat tissue hypoxia effectively.
What do you feel inside a hyperbaric chamber?
As the chamber pressurizes, you may notice pressure changes in your ears, similar to ascending in an aircraft. You might feel slight discomfort, but this can be alleviated by yawning, swallowing, or gently 'blowing your nose' to equalize the pressure. Aside from this, you will not experience any unusual sensations.
How does being inside a pressurized chamber give us more oxygen?
Inside a chamber pressurized to 1.3 or 1.5 times normal air pressure, the environment may feel similar, but the impact is profound. Breathing pure oxygen in this setting delivers 7-8 times the usual oxygen levels. Henry's Law explains how elevated pressure enhances the dissolution of gases into liquids, meaning pressurized oxygen infuses body fluids directly. This significant rise in tissue oxygen levels accelerates healing, a scientifically validated effect.
What improvements can I expect to see?
The potential for improvement varies widely among individuals. Generally, users experience an enhanced quality of life, although results differ from person to person. While it's rare not to see any progress, the precise benefits are unique to each user.
When will I know how many sessions of HBOT are enough?
Determining the exact number of sessions needed is subjective. Notice the changes in your condition. A study of 1,730 subjects suggests around 15 sessions for acute injuries and approximately 40 for chronic issues. If improvements are evident after 40 sessions, consider continuing with another cycle. You are the best judge of your needs, surpassing any doctor's estimates.
