Why is oxygen so important?
Oxygen is a vital element for life, with the average adult consuming nearly 550 liters daily. It forms 90% of our energy source, while food and water supply the rest. The human brain, although only 2% of body weight, requires 25% of the oxygen we inhale, fueling the energy cycle essential for life. Lack of sufficient oxygen in tissues can lead to severe health issues like infections or tissue destruction. The window to address low tissue oxygen (hypoxia) is limited, and one of the most effective solutions is the use of a hyperbaric chamber.
What do you feel inside a hyperbaric chamber?
During pressurization in a hyperbaric chamber, you may notice ear pressure, similar to altitude changes, causing slight discomfort. To alleviate this, you can yawn, swallow, or perform a gentle 'blow the nose' technique. Apart from this, the experience is generally devoid of unusual sensations.
How does being inside a pressurized chamber give us more oxygen?
Inside a hyperbaric chamber with pressure heightened to 1.3 or 1.5 times above normal, and breathing pure oxygen, the body absorbs 7-8 times the typical oxygen amounts. Following Henry's Law, the pressurized environment allows oxygen to dissolve more effectively into body fluids, dramatically raising tissue oxygen levels within minutes, which has been scientifically shown to promote healing.
What improvements can I expect to see?
Improvement from hyperbaric oxygen therapy can vary widely, with enhancements typically in quality of life. While results differ, it's unusual not to see some benefits. General experience suggests personalized outcomes, acknowledging that each individual's body reacts uniquely to the therapy.
When will I know how many sessions of HBOT are enough?
Determining the right number of HBOT sessions can be challenging. A study on 1730 subjects suggests around 15 sessions for acute injuries and 40 for chronic ones. If improvements are noticeable early, continue with more sessions. Ultimately, you may be the best judge of how many sessions yield optimal results, often surpassing a preset medical estimate.
