Why is oxygen so important?
Consider this: An average adult consumes 2 kg of food and 1 liter of water daily, yet nearly 550 liters of oxygen fuels a staggering 90% of our energy needs, with food and water supplying the rest. The human brain, occupying a mere 2% of our body weight, astonishingly uses up 25% of the oxygen we intake. This vital oxygen is indispensable for the energy cycle that sustains life. Insufficient oxygen in body tissues can precipitate conditions leading to infections or tissue destruction. If low oxygen—or hypoxia—affects tissues, timely intervention is crucial. A hyperbaric chamber offers an excellent method to combat tissue hypoxia effectively.
What do you feel inside a hyperbaric chamber?
During pressurization, you may notice a change in ear pressure, causing slight discomfort. To alleviate this, techniques such as yawning, swallowing, or 'blowing the nose' can help equalize the pressure, dispelling any ear fullness sensation. Beyond this manageable discomfort, you won't experience any unusual sensations.
How does being inside a pressurized chamber give us more oxygen?
Within a chamber pressurized to 1.3 or 1.5 times the normal air pressure, while it might not feel different, the magic happens when you breathe pure oxygen, increasing oxygen intake by 7-8 times the regular amount. Henry's Law explains this: at a gas-liquid interface, the amount of gas dissolving in a liquid is proportional to its partial pressure. The pressurized oxygen efficiently dissolves into all body fluids, rapidly enhancing tissue oxygen levels beyond normal, a scientifically-proven process that stimulates healing.
What improvements can I expect to see?
Due to the myriad variables involved, outcomes can vary significantly. However, improvements in quality of life are typically observed, albeit differing from person to person. In rare cases, minimal improvements are seen, but the overarching aim is always enhancement of life quality.
When will I know how many sessions of HBOT are enough?
The true determinant is your own observation of ongoing improvements. Research involving 1730 subjects indicates around 15 sessions for acute injuries and 40 for chronic ones are beneficial. Notice positive results by the 40th session? Then continue for another 40. Keep experiencing benefits? Extend further. Ultimately, you are the best judge of the necessary number of sessions, even more so than a doctor.
